Pasta with Yogurt Sauce

It isn’t until very recently that the concept of eating plain yogurt has become more popular. It’s with the rise of Greek Yogurt’s popularity that more Americans are open to the idea of eating yogurt that isn’t Vanilla or Strawberry flavored.

It took me a long time to realize that most people (Arabs not included) don’t use plain yogurt or keep it in their house. It’s practically unheard of to spinach, malfouf or kubbeh bel sineyeh without it! And Mansaf is basically yogurt and lamb.

As a kid, my mom used to make this easy pasta dish that we absolutely loved. It’s very simple to make, but packed with tons of flavor. We used to call it “that spaghetti with ground beef and yogurt sauce.” To this day, we haven’t named it. Just this morning mom called it “Arabic Pasta.”

If you’re not used to plain yogurt in your diet, you’re missing out. I can come up with a number of ways to start including it.

Pasta with Yogurt Sauce

Ingredients

  • 4 servings Angel Hair Pasta or Spaghetti Pasta
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • ½ cup Plain Non-Fat Yogurt
  • ½ lb Ground Beef
  • 2 tablespoons Seven Spice
  • 1 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 Yellow Onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Pine Nuts
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the noodles to el dente
  2. In the meantime, heat vegetable oil in a medium skillet
  3. Add the onions and cook until translucent
  4. Add the garlic and the ground beef
  5. Add seven spice, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg and mix well
  6. Cook until the ground beef is browned and cooked through
  7. Once the meat is cooked through, move the meat to the side and using the same skillet and any remaining oil, brown the pine nuts
  8. Mix with the ground beef
  9. Drain the noodles, then mix in the plain yogurt until coated
  10. Add the ground beef mixture
  11. Serve Warm
